About Mr Aadhar Sharma

Born and raised in Hampshire and trained in London and Surrey. Aadhar performs a wide range of spinal procedures including injections, microdiscectomies, decompressions and fusions across the whole length of the spine. He has a large NHS spinal practice at Ashford and St Peter’s which encompasses elective and emergency cases. His private practice mirrors that of his NHS work with a meticulous pursuit of outstanding patient outcomes and satisfaction.

Training and Appointment

Mr Sharma qualified from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals and undertook basic surgical training in Essex. He spent a year doing research at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital and subsequently gained a place on the prestigious Imperial North-West Thames training programme based at St Mary’s and Charing Cross Hospitals.

During his training, he spent two years at the major trauma centre at St Mary’s Hospital which included time with the spinal trauma unit. He gained invaluable experience of both orthopaedic and neurosurgical techniques in spinal surgery whilst there. He also worked in the high-volume spinal unit at the Royal Free Hospital, London.

His senior registrar year was spent at the internationally-renowned spinal unit at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital where he further broadened his skill base in managing adult and paediatric spinal deformity as well as complex and revision degenerative spinal cases.

During his training, he also received a comprehensive level of training in general orthopaedic trauma with an emphasis on major trauma.

His advanced fellowship was in the highly reputed spinal unit at Frimley Park Hospital. Here, he refined his techniques in all aspects of adult spinal surgery with an emphasis on minimally invasive and microscopic techniques but also in the whole range of spinal instrumented cases. He also refined his skills in emergency spinal surgery for cauda equina compression, spinal tumours, infection and fractures. He worked at Frimley and then St Peter’s as a locum consultant for a short stint before his substantive appointment.

Research and Publications

He is widely published across the breadth of trauma and orthopaedic surgery and has presented his work internationally. He is also a recognised trainer for the KSS and London deaneries and is regularly invited to lecture to higher surgical trainees and postgraduate students.

During training, Mr Sharma completed a master’s degree from Imperial College London in Surgical Innovation. This introduced the principles of quality improvement which underline Mr Sharma’s practice to this day. This combined with his extensive background in research ensures that his patients will receive up to date methods and techniques of treatment which are at the same time underpinned with a solid evidence base.

Aside of his busy spinal practice, Mr Sharma is also a prolific trauma surgeon and participates on the trauma rota at the famed Rowley Bristow Unit at St Peter’s Hospital, Chertsey.

With a high level of expertise stemming from his unique experience, his opinion is regularly sought by his orthopaedic consultant colleagues as well as those from other disciplines on patients with spinal problems, both routine and complex.

Current Practice

Aadhar see’s patients presenting with all disorders affecting the spine, be it in the cervical, thoracic, lumbar or sacral regions. The emphasis of his practice now is on adult degenerative spinal disorders and on those patients with injuries affecting the spinal column.

His surgical practice is focused on treating patients with spinal stenosis or spinal related nerve impingement resulting in symptoms radiating to the arms or legs. The bulk of his surgical practice involves addressing prolapsed discs or narrowed spinal canals with decompressive surgery.

His philosophy surrounds maintaining motion in the spine whenever possible. Microscopic techniques allow for this while reducing the size of surgical incisions and allowing faster rehabiliation.

Mr Sharma has also been trained in endoscopic spinal surgery and is in the process of introducing this to his practice, this promises to accelerate post-operative recovery and improve outcomes. In instances of instability or significant malalignment of the vertebrae, spinal fusion is performed with the latest techniques and evidence based implants.

Areas of expertise

Based on patient reviews & skill endorsements by other professionals

    Cervical Spine Surgery

Comprehensive evaluation and surgical management of conditions affecting the neck and upper spine. Using detailed medical history, physical examination, and advanced imaging, treatment plans address both acute injuries and chronic spinal conditions, restoring mobility, stability, and quality of life.

    Lumbar Decompression

Advanced surgical techniques to relieve pressure on spinal nerves in the lower back. Designed to reduce pain, improve function, and minimise recovery time, these procedures often employ minimally invasive methods for faster, safer outcomes.

    Lumbar Fusion

Specialised surgical treatment to stabilise the lower spine by fusing vertebrae together. Recommended for severe degenerative changes, trauma, or instability, lumbar fusion aims to restore alignment, reduce pain, and improve long-term spinal health.

    Lumbar Microdiscectomy

Minimally invasive surgery to remove herniated disc material pressing on spinal nerves, relieving symptoms such as leg pain, numbness, and weakness. This procedure promotes rapid recovery and a return to normal activities.

    Epidural Injections for Sciatica

Targeted injections to reduce inflammation and pain caused by nerve compression in the lower spine. Often used as part of a wider treatment plan to manage sciatica and improve mobility without the need for immediate surgery.

    Back Pain Treatment

Comprehensive management of back pain through tailored non-surgical and surgical options. Treatments may include physiotherapy, injections, and advanced spinal procedures, all aimed at addressing the root cause and improving quality of life.
